What are superfoods and how can I eat them?
Superfoods are foods that have many health benefits. Many fruits, legumes, vegetables, or seeds have multiple nutrients (called phytonutrients) and they are considered superfoods. For example, many have phytochemicals in them such as carotenoids, antioxidants, and flavonoids1.
Carotenoids are antioxidants that lower inflammation in the body and some carotenoids even may be protective in eye diseases2.
Antioxidants can slow down or even prevent cell damage and can help reduce oxidative stress which has been linked to multiple diseases such as cancer, heart disease or others3.
Flavonoids possess several medicinal benefits, including anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties 4.
The research is clear that many fruits, legumes, vegetables, or seeds have more than one nutrient and we could benefit from eating more of these foods regularly!
