Stay hydrated with water, fruits, and vegetables!

First, lets talk about water and the benefits of water.

Hydrating your body is important. But, there's no one-size-fits-all answer to how much water one should drink, as fluid needs vary among individuals. According to the Harvard Medical School, the benefits of drinking water is clear. Those benefits include: 1

    • carrying nutrients and oxygen to your cells
    • flushing bacteria from your bladder
    • aiding digestion
    • preventing constipation
    • normalizing blood pressure
    • cushioning joints
    • protecting organs and tissues
    • regulating body temperature
    • maintaining electrolyte (sodium) balance

What about fruits and vegetables? Can one stay hydrated from fruits and vegetables?

According to UCLA Health, "Your body typically gets about 20% of the water it needs from the foods you eat throughout the day. Foods that typically provide the highest water content are raw fruits and vegetables. Eating a diet heavy in produce is a good way to give the body vitamins, minerals and fiber while increasing your daily water intake."2 So you can see that eating raw fruits and vegetables is not only nutritious but helps keep you hydrated.

What fruits or vegetables have a high water content?

"Any fruits and vegetables with more than 80% water content are a great choice. But these foods (all with a water content greater than 92%) offer the best bang for your buck when it comes to getting the water your body needs."2

Here is a partial list of the vegetables and fruits that are high in water content.

    • Cucumbers
    • Iceberg Lettuce
    • Celery
    • Radishes
    • Romaine Lettuce
    • Tomatoes
    • Zucchini & Summer Squash
    • Asparagus
    • Bell peppers
    • Cabbage
    • Bok choy
    • Cauliflower
    • Mushrooms
    • Spinach
    • Strawberries
    • Watermelon

So you can see that if you are eating a plant-based diet rich in fruits, and vegetables this can help keep you healthy and hydrated as well.
