    Plant-Based Diets and Headache Prevention

Headaches come and go. At some point, many people get headaches, but some are worse than others. But, did you know eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can reduce headache symptoms or their frequency?

Yes, the studies were done and the proof is in the details. One analysis stated "They found that people who followed a vegan diet had much less migraine pain and intensity, their migraines didn’t last as long as they used to, and they needed less pain medication than before"1

But why? Why do fruits and vegetables have such a positive effect on headaches? Some doctors believe this is because you eliminate potential triggers in foods such as dairy products. And, by removing meats you also eliminate inflammatory compounds found in meat1. Plus, many fruits and vegetables have super beneficial compounds such as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Furthermore, fruits and vegetables do not contain sources of the amino acid tyramine which has been a factor in triggering migraine attacks in some people.

Plus there are more benefits for women. According to one analysis: "A low-fat, high-fiber vegan diet also seems to lower estrogen activity, a factor in premenstrual syndrome (PMS). PMS symptoms often include headaches."1

Now for some interesting study details results. In one study called the MEPHASOUS study, there was an aim to assess the relation between fruit and vegetable intake and primary headaches among Iranian university students. And they had 83,214 university students participate in the study.

What was the conclusion? "Fruit and vegetable intakes were associated with reduced odds of primary headaches."2 and "greater intake of fruits was associated with 30% lower odds of primary headache" and "students in the top category of vegetable consumption were 16% less likely to have primary headaches compared with those in the bottom category"2.

So the proof is there. Increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables can also help reduce headaches or their frequency. In addition, make sure you eat lots of antioxidant-rich foods that can help reduce oxidizing stress. And, don't forget to eat nourishing meals.
